In 2005, Maples Finance (Cayman office) was growing rapidly and needed to relocate. They required a space that would not only accommodate a greater number of staff more efficiently, but also one that could be easily modified to their changing needs. It was also important for their space to facilitate staff communication, while at the same time balancing this with privacy. The end result is a predominantly open plan space with 104 workstations and only five enclosed offices, in a two storey 170,000 square foot fit out. Individual privacy was achieved though large 6foot by 8 foot workstations with panels of varying heights, while complete privacy was made available in multiple meeting rooms located throughout the space.
The budget for the project as is typical for the average fit-out, was quite lean. It was thus important to use design as a tool to distribute the budget wisely through the office space. With this in mind, the staff spaces were designed with modest materials and details, using bold colour as the key design element. Plastic laminate was used throughout on doors and millwork. High-traffic areas received vinyl flooring and fluorescent lighting was used throughout. This enabled a higher level of finishes and design elements in the client areas, which include the reception area and boardroom. Here, a feature undulating wall was integrated for visual interest while upgraded lighting and attractive ceiling details enhance the aesthetic. Wood flooring and suede wall covering is seen throughout these areas, creating a warm and approachable space with and element of success and longevity.
